Picks: January

Hey everyone, as promised listed below are my picks for January 2019! As I stated in the previous post, the theme is "Critically Acclaimed" and as per the rules I have to give a bit of an explanation behind each of my picks. In addition I cannot pick anything I have already completed, so although it may surprise you I have not completed any of the choices listed below before. With that out of the way, let's get into it!

Album: The Dark Side of the Moon

Artist: Pink Floyd


Currently listed as the best album of all time on Ranker, and coming in at number 14 on sputnik music's best albums of all time, this is undeniably one of the most critically acclaimed albums ever released.

Why did I chose this album: Within the sphere of progressive rock there seems to be no album more popular than Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. It seems to be an album to serve as a great stepping stone into the world of progressive rock, and an album that I absolutely need to listen to.

Book: Don Quixote

Author: Miguel de Cervantes


Touted by many as the first modern novel, and coming in at number two on the list of greatest books ever written, Don Quixote is a novel that seemed right up my alley.

Why did I chose this book: When looking at reviews, what stuck out to me about Don Quixote was the influence this book carries. A hilarious social commentary which shaped modern literature as we know it, there was no better choice than Don Quixote.

Movie: The Shawshank Redemption

Director: Frank Darabont


Currently the best rated movie on IMDB with 9.3 stars over two million user ratings, The Shawshank Redemption is the definition of critically acclaimed.

Why did I chose this Movie: In all honesty this is a movie I am not very interested in; however, that's exactly why it's the perfect movie for me to watch. With so many good reviews and recommendations, I cannot wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Studio: Nintendo


Finally, we have what is likely the most critically acclaimed game ever made topping almost every "greatest game ever made" list on the internet, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Why did I chose this Game: I have tried to complete the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time numerous times, each to no avail. For some reason I just cannot even get close to completing this game and I think it's finally time I changed that.

    I write notes and thoughts on every new game I play. They aren't super organized but I'm down to share them!

Hello everyone! We are well into June which means it is time to divulge into my picks for June. The Lord of the Rings season is over which means everything is back to normal and the themes are no longer going to be centered around any series in general. Picks: April

Hello Everyone! March is over,  April is here , bring me the April Picks! For anyone who doesn't know, I decided to be selfish and read all of the Lord of The Rings books this year over the course of a three month span. Because of this I am shaping my themes for the months around the themes of each Lord of the Ring book. Last month's theme was nature , this months's theme... War . Book: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Author: J. R. R. Tolkien Why I chose this book: Since as I have said before I am reading this whole series over the course of three months I didn't really have too many options on this one. What is Year of Critique?

What is Year of Critique? Listen to one album, read one book, watch one film, and complete one video game, and write an in depth critique on each one, every single month, for an entire year. This is the challenge I am setting for myself in 2019. Why Am I Doing This?       When looking back on my four years of university, it pains me how frequently critical analysis of media was at the back of my to-do list. Other things almost always took priority; however, it doesn't accurately reflect how important I think analyzing media is. It's something I've been slacking on, and I believe doing a year of critique will scratch an itch that's been left unscratched for quite some time.
