Picks: February

Hey everyone! I meant to get this out a couple days ago but I decided to attend Genesis 6 this weekend which took priority over releasing my picks for February. With that all said and done I'm incredibly excited to share with all of you my picks for February!

For anyone who didn't read my picks for January post, let me explain some of the rules. First off the theme is love. For my picks I am not allowed to choose anything I have already completed and I must give a bit of an explanation behind all of my picks. This means that if your favorite album, movie, book, or game is not picked just keep in mind that there is a chance I have already completed it. In addition at the end of this post, after all of my picks, I will include one recommendation. Alright now that you know that let's get into it!

Album: Loveless

Artist: My Bloody Valentine

Why I chose this album: What better way to kick off the list than with an album whose title indicates the opposite of the theme. No I'm just joking, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is a Shoegaze album that took two full years to make. Don't let the title fool you, this album encapsulates love of the musical art-form to its fullest. While I am quite familiar with modern Shoegaze, this album was released in 1991 which is insane considering how "modern" I assumed the genre to be. This album is currently rated as the best Shoegaze album on Sputnik music, and is one I have been excited to listen to for an incredibly long time so I can't wait to finally get to it.

Movie: Amélie

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Why I choose this movie: What encapsulates love better than a french romantic comedy set in Paris? Nominated for 5 Oscars and ranking in at number 91 on IMDB, I don't know if there is a more well received love story out there. Most critics I respect give this movie very good reviews and so, fitting into the theme perfectly, I am incredibly excited to check this one out.

Book: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Author: Oscar Wilde

Why I chose this Book: Written by gay icon Oscar Wilde, this book is a hilarious, deceptively creepy tale about one man's uncontrollable lust for vanity. In addition to the ever present theme "love of things", are gay undertones liberally dispersed throughout the novel. While many of these undertones likely went over the heads of those who read it back in the day, nowadays they seem incredibly obvious and add to the humor and charm this book has to offer. This book may not be the traditional romance that many may have expected from this list, but I promise you it is well worth your time.

Game: Catherine

Studio: Atlus Games

Why I chose this game: Honestly I know very little about this game going into this month. When I told my friends however that my theme for the month of February was love, they told me I absolutely have to play Catherine. Unfortunately for me I had no way to play the game not owning a PS3 or an Xbox 360 so I forgot about it for a while. Lo and behold the game receives a PC port in mid January and so as it seems the Universe as smiled upon me, I now feel that playing anything else would be to go against the Universes wishes. All I know about this game is that it is a puzzle game that's incredibly raunchy, and is developed by a studio I trust Atlus games. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this big unknown has in store for me.

Recommendation: To the Moon

Medium: Video Game

Studio: Freebird Games

If I could recommend one title to you all that you would actually go out and play it would be this one. Unfortunately to explain much more would be a disservice to you all, as the game is best played with as little information as possible. All I will say is that it fits into the theme of this month incredibly well. Please, please, if you have not heard of this game play it on my recommendation. It takes less than 5 hours to complete, so there are no excuses for not giving this game a look if you haven't already.

...

And that's it, those are my picks and my recommendation for February! As I said before I have till the end of the month to finish them and write a review/critique on each one individually. The reviews/critiques for last month's picks will be coming out throughout this week and next, so stay tuned for those. Till then!

Review/Critique: The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde "If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that - for that - I would give everything!" - Dorian Gray Expectations: I had already read the first two chapters before choosing this book for the month of February. I liked what I had read a lot and my girlfriend Allie gives this book praises for days so I expected to really like this book. Needless to say, I absolutely adored "The Picture of Dorian Gray ". It fully lived up to my expectations of it, and has become a book that after more pondering could easily end up a 6/6 for me. If you want to go into this book without any knowledge (something I do recommend) then hopefully that is enough of a blurb to convince you to check this novel out, but if you need more convincing let me attempt to do so below. Review/Critique: To summarize a book like "The Picture of Dorian Gray " is not an easy task I am findin

Picks: June

Hello everyone! We are well into June which means it is time to divulge into my picks for June. The Lord of the Rings season is over which means everything is back to normal and the themes are no longer going to be centered around any series in general. The theme I have chosen for this month is  Space , let's get into the picks! Album: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust Why I chose this Album: An incredibly famous album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is what launched David Bowie into stardom. I have never listened to any David Bowie album in its entirety before, and as he is one of the most culturally relevant figures in modern society it is a stain on my back to say the least. Therefore, I wanted to listen to one of David Bowie's albums this year and the theme of space was the perfect month to do so. Many of David Bowie's albums could have worked fine as his central character Ziggy Stardust acts as a messenger for extraterrestrials - but I chose this one

Review: The Revenant

The Revenant Alejandro González Iñárritu Review: I absolutely adore Leonardo DiCaprio. Inception, Django Unchained and The Wolf of Wall Street are among some of my favorite movies and Leo's performance in all of them, in my opinion, is top notch. This movie though, this movie right here is the one that won Leo an Oscar. I've been dying to see it for a while now, but a lack of funds kept me from seeing it in theaters, and a dwindling interest in film as a whole kept me from getting around to it entirely. Now that I've seen it though, I feel safe in saying that this is Leonardo DiCaprio's best performance to date.          Does that mean it's my favorite movie I've seen with Leonardo DiCaprio in it? No, not really. In fact I would say that I like it less than all of the movies I listed above, but of stand alone performances, this is Leo's best. Don't get me wrong, this is a quality film, but it wasn't totally up my alley. The Revenant i
